The PS, the environmentalists and the communists have proposed Laurence Tubiana for the post of Prime Minister to LFI, France Télévisions learned on Monday July 15. Aged 73, this economist was an ambassador for the COP21 negotiations, chaired the Citizens’ Convention for the Climate and heads the European Climate Foundation.
This announcement was received coldly by LFI MP Paul Vannier, one of the party’s negotiators, who accuses him of being close to Emmanuel Macron. “I cannot believe that after having vetoed Huguette Bello’s candidacy, Olivier Faure is preparing to try to impose on the New Popular Front a Macron-compatible candidacy for Matignon”he commented on X. The rebels had, a little earlier, rejected the idea of a civil society personality for the post of Prime Minister, announcing that they were suspending discussions for Matignon.
Laurence Tubiana recently co-signed a column in The world urging the NFP to “without delay, reach out to other actors on the Republican front to discuss a Republican emergency program and a government”.
The one who defines herself as “left-wing and environmentalist woman” has sometimes been mentioned during the negotiations of the Macronists to form previous governments, without ever following through. Laurence Tubiana has chaired the European Climate Foundation since 2017 and was notably Lionel Jospin’s environmental advisor from 1997 to 2002.
