The justice opens a judicial investigation “in order to determine the exact circumstances” of the start of a fire that occurred in a crèche of the People & Baby group on Tuesday September 20 in Lyon, franceinfo learned on Friday from the Lyon prosecutor’s office. The investigation is entrusted to the departmental directorate of public security (DDSP) of the Rhône, specifies the prosecution.
In parallel with this judicial investigation, the Rhône prefecture asked the Métropole de Lyon to conduct an administrative investigation to check in particular whether all the safety standards have been respected in the establishment. In the meantime, the nursery is administratively closed for at least three months. The People & Baby group talks about a closure “illegitimate” and said to have filed an appeal.
Late Tuesday afternoon, a dish towel left on a hob caused a fire to start in a kitchen area accessible to children. Four of them were inside, while the two childcare workers present at the time of the incident found themselves stuck with six other children in the nursery garden. The firefighters had to break down a door to rescue the four trapped children.
This is the third administrative closure of a People & Baby group crèche in three months. The first came in early July after the death of an 11-month-old girl. An employee had confessed to having made him voluntarily ingest Destop. In July in Bordeaux, another crèche of the group closed for at least three months, because of “inappropriate behavior” of some employees towards children.
