The promises of COP26 hide a mixed record, and astrology has been a hit since the health crisis

Between the motivation of the first days and the mixed atmosphere in which the COP26 in Glasgow ends today, the tone has clearly changed. Of course, the 197 countries should reach an agreement as a draft final declaration is being discussed. Certainly, there are advances such as this surprise agreement concluded between the United States and China: the two largest emitters of greenhouse gases are committed to strengthening their action.

But for many the account is not there. “The promises ring hollow as the fossil fuel industry continues to receive trillions of subsidies” criticizes Antonio Guterres, the secretary general of the United Nations. So what should we take away from this 26th COP? Etienne Monin, environment specialist in the editorial staff of franceinfo, tells me about the ballet of the negotiations and the mixed results of this crucial summit.

Astrology, a bulwark against the crisis?

Le Quart d’Heure also looks at a booming discipline: astrology. Compatibility of the signs of the zodiac, role of the ascendants … Thousands of videos explore on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube this universe which seduces more and more. “There is a lot of enthusiasm on this subject “ confirms Shera, who has 1.9 million subscribers on her YouTube channel and who has just published a book “Astro book”.

The profile of astrology fans? Mainly young people. According to a recent IFOP study, 70% of 18-24 year olds say they believe in astrology. Fabrice Pascaud, tarologist in the center of Paris, confirms that his clientele has become younger in recent months: “There is a worry following the pandemic, people are aware that everything can change and are looking for the meaning to give to their lives.”

Is it problematic to look for the answers that do us good in the stars? “People who read their horoscopes regularly are more likely to adhere to conspiracy theories” alert Louise Jussian, who carried out a study on astrology for the IFOP institute. “Astrology and conspiracy use the same levers, and are part of the same crisis of confidence, in scientific and religious institutions.”
