A lively controversy is stirring the village of Montagnac, in Hérault. While the department faces a lack of water, the town hall has agreed to sell its groundwater to a large industrial group to produce up to 500,000 plastic bottles of water per day.

The village of Montagnac (Hérault) is backed by a treasure: a spring. A gigantic sheet of water awaits underground, 1,500 meters deep. An industrial group would like to exploit it. The estate of Anaïs Ricome, winegrower, would be crossed by a ballet of trucks. The promise to sell the drilling has already been signed: 30,000 euros for the ALMA group, which could market the water from the source.

The mayor torn

“I can’t understand how in 2023, we say to ourselves, hey, we’re going to sell our water resources, which are so expensive, for 30,000 euros”, she laments. The plant could produce 500,000 of Crystalline water per day, perhaps two to three times more. If the water table belongs to the State, the Montagnac town hall has promised for sale a plot of 3,000 m2, where the drilling is located. The mayor is torn between selling the resource to the private sector and the prospect of property taxes and around twenty jobs.
