Wednesday, May 4, the 19/20 looks at mustard prices which have risen due to a drought in Canada and war in Ukraine.
On Wednesday May 4, mustard prices rose 9.26% year-on-year. “I needed mustard and I went to four shops to get it”, says a consumer. Mustard seeds, which are used to make the product, are hard to find. Their price has been multiplied by five. Canada, the world’s largest seed producer, has experienced a drought. Russia, targeted by sanctions since the start of the war in Ukraine, is another major supplier.
In Côte-d’Or, a French mustard production company is already feeling the consequences. “Our workshops are three chains, which run in three shifts, practically all year round. Today, we only have one packaging workshop”, regrets Benoît Ruffy, production manager at Charbonneaux Brabant. In the Bas-Rhin, another manufacturer survives thanks to French farmers, who provide 60% of it.
