Fruit and vegetable prices have fallen by 5 to 9% over a year. Explanations.
Melon at 1.95 euros, beefsteak tomatoes at less than 4 euros per kilo, and zucchini at 2.50 euros at a market in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes). The price of seasonal fruit and vegetables is finally dropping, provided you find the right stand. The drop sometimes reaches several tens of cents. “This year prices have dropped for peaches and nectarines”confides the seller. Vegetables have fallen by an average of 9% in one year, fruits by 5%.
Among the most significant, vine tomatoes, the price of which per kilo has fallen by 31%, falling below 2 euros. The price of Charentais melons has fallen by 18%, and carrots by 14%. The spring rains have favoured a good late harvest. The bad weather has also slowed down consumption. At a market gardener, production is particularly abundant, normally for courgettes. To remain competitive, he has lowered their price per kilo by one euro. The drop should however be put into perspective, since prices are 16% more expensive than three years ago.
