Claire Thoury, president of the governance committee of the citizens’ convention on the end of life, returned on Saturday April 27 on franceinfo on the four months of discussion, on the occasion of the very last session of the convention on the subject.
“What I would like us to remember from this adventure is [que la fin de vie] is more than a subject of division and unity, because precisely on this subject we cannot tell one that he is wrong and the other that he is right. And this requires constant humility, to put oneself in the other’s place. This is what citizens did for four months, and I hope this is what parliamentarians will do over the coming weeks.”she said, while the text arrived in special committee at the National Assembly this week.
“A democratic tour de force”
The work of the 184 members, carried out at the beginning of 2023, resulted in a project presented on April 10 to the Council of Ministers. Claire Thoury is pleased to have experienced, with the convention, “a democratic tour de force”. “It was great to do it on such a sensitive subject, over such a long period of time”retains the president of the convention.
Emmanuel Macron affirmed that he would launch a third citizens’ convention in 2024, the subject of which is not yet known. “People are really extremely intelligent, much more than we believe, they are sensitive, they want to participate in public affairs. And so for that we must give them the means to do so with the right tools”, she insists. On certain subjects, she believes, we need “asking ordinary people to shed light on public decisions precisely because they are ordinary people in a very specific framework that is the citizens’ convention”.
