Yaël Braun-Pivet “wait firmly before summer” the bill opening up active assistance in dying. “It is time for Parliament to take up this subject, it is time for the bill to be presented to the Council of Ministers so that parliamentarians can deliberate on it”, adds the President of the National Assembly, guest of France Inter on Wednesday March 6. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal indicated on January 30 that the examination of this ultrasensitive text, postponed several times, will take place “before summer”.

For the Yvelines MP, “We must go further” than what is provided for in current legislation. “We must give each French person, each of our fellow citizens, the freedom to choose the end of life”she says. “I have met many people who tell me that today, things are not going well. They do not have sufficient access to palliative care and sometimes they would like to have access to a different end of life. We need to help them offer this choice”she emphasizes.

“Take time”

What model for this active assistance in dying? “We have to invent it”, replies the chosen one. One thing is sure, “it must come from parliamentary deliberation”. It sets out its conditions for the examination of this bill: “We must not follow an accelerated procedure, each chamber must be able to take the time to bring together what we call a special commission, which will bring together a certain number of parliamentarians so that they can hold hearings, that they can reflect on the evolution of the text.”

“Parliamentarians will do their work and they must be able to do it serenely, calmly, respectfully”she continues. “Time is a condition for a calm debate” on this thorny subject. “What I hope is that at the end of this mandate, before 2027, we will be able to adopt legislation on active assistance in dying in France. It is time, it is high time”points out Yaël Braun-Pivet.
