The Peruvian head of state Pedro Castillo announced, Tuesday, April 5, an early lifting of the curfew in force since dawn in Lima. The measure was intended to contain protests by transporters against fuel prices, but it sparked criticism and misunderstanding because these rallies had taken place outside the capital. “It is appropriate to call on the Peruvian people to calm downsaid the president of the radical left, after a meeting with parliamentarians. The measures taken (…) are not against the people, but to protect the lives of our compatriots.”

The curfew affected Lima and the neighboring port of Callao, more than 10 million people. It was originally to be held until midnight. Its lifting was greeted by cries of joy from hundreds of demonstrators gathered not far from Parliament and in several districts of the capital, according to AFP journalists. They marched to protest against the curfew, but also against the rising prices of fuels and consumer products.

Peru has been rocked for several weeks by demonstrations marked by clashes, which continued on Tuesday in Lima, leaving 25 police officers injured. This is the first social crisis faced by Pedro Castillo since his election in 2021.
