It is indeed a wolf that was seen on November 19 near Bayeux, in Calvados, confirms this Monday the French Office for Biodiversity at France Bleu Normandie. The animal was sighted in the municipalities of Sully, Maisons and Sommervieu in particular, by several witnesses who took pictures. “We were warned on Friday morning by the gendarmerie who sent us two pictures of a large canine”, explains Nathalie Pfeiffer, coordinator of the Loup-Lynx network at the French Office for Biodiversity in Normandy.
“Our officers were there immediately and found fingerprints.” The photos were sent to the national network which assessed them. “According to the experts, it is indeed a wolf”, confirms this Monday evening Nathalie Pfeiffer. Now that the animal has been identified, analyzes are continuing to find out if it is the same individual who was spotted a few days ago in the department of Eure.
The wolf returned to Normandy in the Seine-Maritime department in 2020. It reappeared at the end of November in the Eure, but “this is the first time in a very long time that we have seen one in Calvados!”, confides Nathalie Pfeiffer.
