To strengthen the independence of public health, the law that governs it must be reopened, according to the Parti Québécois, which undertook on Thursday to table a bill to this effect.
In a plan entitled “the twelve works of the Parti Québécois”, supposed to help relaunch the health network, the third opposition group touts the idea of tabling a bill to “ensure the full transparency of all [les] opinion and all [les] communications” of the national director of public health (DNSP).
“We are going to completely review the law. There is not just the independence of Public Health. There is the whole history of governance by decree, ”said PQ leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon on Thursday.
“There are other issues,” he continued.
Since the very beginning of the pandemic, and more loudly in recent months, the opposition parties in the National Assembly have deplored a certain lack of independence on the part of Public Health. Last week, the health and welfare commissioner tabled a report in which she raised the need for a more autonomous national director.
According to the current model, the DNSP – in this case, Luc Boileau – holds the position of assistant deputy minister within the Ministry of Health and Social Services. After several requests to this effect, he agreed to meet the journalists on Thursday without the presence of a political actor. The press conference is scheduled for the afternoon.
Further details will follow.
