“The Power of the Dog” and “West Side Story” big winners of Golden Globes shunned by Hollywood

The Power of the Dog and West Side Story won the main prizes on Sunday, January 9, at a Golden Globes ceremony, the winners of which were revealed online, without televsion or red carpet. Jane Campion’s grim western becomes the second female-directed film to win the Golden Globe for Best Dramatic Feature. He also won the awards for Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor for Kodi Smit-McPhee.

The remake of West Side Story, directed by Steven Spielberg, was awarded the Golden Globe for Best Comedy or Musical. Rachel Zegler won Best Actress in a Comedy and Ariana DeBose won Best Supporting Actress. Will Smith and Nicole Kidman, meanwhile, received the Globes for Outstanding Actor and Actress in a Drama Film for their roles in The Williams Method and Being the Ricardos.

While they usually bring together the biggest Hollywood stars, the Golden Globes have been deserted this year by celebrities, who criticize their lack of diversity and transparency. The NBC television channel has even given up broadcasting the ceremony, which has been followed in recent years by millions of viewers. Officially, the organizers invoked the pandemic to explain this situation.

But the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which is the jury for these awards and which is made up of around 100 people with links to foreign publications, has long been privately accused of a series of failures, ranging from corruption to racism. Grievances that have been made public by The Los Angeles Times, pushing the association to launch reforms to diversify its members.
