Demography: the population is increasing in France, but especially in the cities – (franceinfo)
France now has 67.4 million inhabitants. INSEE has published the results of its latest demographic census. Disparities are still large between urban and rural areas.
The town of Caen (Calvados), in Normandy, has gained nearly 2,000 inhabitants in seven years. To accommodate them, the city is currently building 1,800 new housing units: “We have jobs being created, we are lucky to have a relatively open territory, we have the sea, (…) we have the countryside.”
Population in sharp decline in Martinique, Meuse and Haute-Marne
The trend is increasing across the rest of the country. Between 2015 and 2021, France gained 203,000 inhabitants each year. But significant disparities remain, since the gap is widening between cities and the countryside. Growth is twice as high in urban areas. The shift is towards the Atlantic coast and the South-West. On the other hand, the population is in sharp decline in Martinique, Meuse and Haute-Marne.
