After the terrible collision between two trains which killed at least 57 people in Greece, the population is angry with the authorities, accused of having let the rail network deteriorate over the years.

On the evening of Thursday March 2, several hundred demonstrators gathered in front of the headquarters of the railway company in Athens (Greece). They chant: “This crime will not be forgotten.Meanwhile, 350 km away, at the scene of the fatal collision between two trains, the rescuers extract bodies from the damaged wagons. Prior to the collision, the two trains had been traveling on the same track for several kilometres. The death toll is nearly 60 dead.

“This disaster could have been avoided”

In the city center of Larissa (Greece), the station closest to the accident, the inhabitants give their blood and seek answers in the face of the disaster. “Politicians have not paid attention to the state of our rails. This disaster could have been avoided.says a Greek woman. The resignation of the Minister of Transport on Wednesday was not enough to calm the anger. The head of the Larissa station was brought before a judge on Thursday. If he has admitted having made an error, the state of the rail network would be also involved, he said. He is being prosecuted for “negligent homicide” and faces life imprisonment.
