The popular Primary changes its candidate. The board of directors of the association 2022 or Never, at the origin of this initiative, chose to support and campaign for Jean-Luc Mélenchon in the first round of the presidential election, according to a press release published on Saturday March 5. . This vote follows the withdrawal of Christiane Taubira, Wednesday, March 2, for lack of sufficient sponsorship. “The People’s Union is the best political vehicle to win our ideas for president”writes this left-wing citizen collective.

The popular Primary had gathered nearly 400,000 voters during an investiture vote at the end of January 2021. This ballot, the result of which was not recognized by the main left-wing candidates selected, had placed Christiane Taubira in the lead, followed by Yannick Jadot. It was finally during a new vote that the board of directors of the association 2022 or Never decided to support Jean-Luc Mélenchon. Which is currently, on the left, the best placed in the polls.

A paradoxical decision, since Jean-Luc Mélenchon had himself refused to participate in the popular Primary. His party, La France insoumise, had even denounced in January a “insincere approach” and “unfair practices” and had strongly asked the organizers of the popular Primary to no longer involve their candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon. “It is time for the electoral campaign to be rid of these unfair practices which instrumentalize the aspirations for unity and have functioned for weeks as a permanent harassment against the legitimacy of left-wing candidates”, had thundered Manuel Bompard, the campaign manager of Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
