The police officer behind the shooting which led to the death of young Nahel in Nanterre last June was released on Wednesday November 15, after the decision of the investigating judge, France Inter learned from sources close to the case.

The 38-year-old civil servant had been in prison since June 29. He remains indicted for “intentional homicide” and is now placed under judicial supervision and is prohibited from traveling to Nanterre.

Prohibition on carrying a weapon and going to Nanterre

The court also prohibited him from carrying a weapon and from coming into contact with the civil parties. The judge considered that the risk of consultation is no longer enough to keep the agent in detention, since theThe hearings of the civil parties and the interrogations of the two police officers present on site on the day of the shooting were carried out. Furthermore, almost five months after the events, detention does not appear to be the only means of ensuring the protection of the accused, considers the court. Until now, several requests for release had been rejected.

The death of Nahel, 17, killed by police shooting after refusing to comply, provoked urban violence in several French cities at the beginning of the summer.
