The police had to intervene in Marseille to “avoid clashes” between OM and PAOK supporters, said the Bouches-du-Rhône police headquarters on Wednesday April 6. Many Greek fans are present in the Marseille city to attend the quarter-final of the Europa League Conference between the two teams, Thursday evening at the Vélodrome stadium.

A stop had however prohibited Greek supporters from arriving in a formed and identifiable group, but this was not respected, explained the police headquarters. They then have “were tracked by a group of Marseille supporters who left the Vieux Port, heading for their hotel”.

In order to avoid clashes between the fans of the two teams, the public security police, supported by CRS, had to intervene “using tear gas canisters”said the same source.

Some Greek supporters tried to leave their hotel “to figure it out“, but they were blocked by law enforcement inside, “where they committed damage”. For their part, the Marseille supporters were dispersed and returned to the Old Port.
