Heartbreaking words

“Love. A word I use every day, sometimes several times a day, in many forms. I use it at the end of my emails to my beloved family or even close friends. I use it when I leave the house. There are ‘with love’, ‘I love you’ and ‘I love you!’ These are several ways to express love. Sometimes I feel obliged to use these words, in response to someone who wrote it to me in an email, it makes me uncomfortable, but I ‘use it anyway. I also use the verb “to like” to describe a good dish. I use it to say what I think of a Netflix series. I often use it to talk about my house, my cat Gloria or what Gloria does, the taste of the melon that I planted in my garden. (…). My daily life is full of things and people that I love and of things and people that I am indifferent to “began the artist.

“I could go on and on, but you get the point. What kind of love do I feel for my wife Suzanne? Can I find it in all those I listed above. It’s a resounding no! No version of This word doesn’t apply to Suzanne. The closest version in words doesn’t even come close. It’s not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction. Unconditional love doesn’t do that. ‘I’d take a bullet for you’ isn’t strong enough. I burst into tears when I think about my feelings for you. Feelings… We’re getting close, but we’re not there yet. 55 years together , 46 years married and not a single hour apart for 42 of those years. Even though that’s not enough. Even going to bed at 6 p.m. and holding hands while we sleep isn’t enough. Looking at your beautiful face while you sleep doesn’t not enough. Back to my feelings. No words, gestures, promises, declarations. Even Oxford academics spent 150 years on it and couldn’t define love in a single word. So, I will call it ‘we’, exclusively, magically, indescribably and beautifully ‘we'”. A moving love letter…
