Dominique Anglade kicked off the 34th congress of members of the Liberal Party of Quebec (PLQ) on Friday by proposing to nationalize the production and distribution of green hydrogen.
The Liberals are banking on investments of $ 100 billion by 2050 – from the public and the private sector – in what they call “the ECO vision”, in order to “meet the climate challenge”.
In her speech to the activists gathered at the Quebec City Convention Center, the Anglade leader said that she saw in Hydrogen Quebec “a solution to replace fossil fuels when electrification is impossible”.
“ECO is the passage to the world without oil. ECO is the transition to carbon neutrality in 2050, ”she said, resuming the commitment she made during the party leadership race.
Ms Anglade stressed that hydrogen will represent “up to 24% of global energy demand” by 2050. “Experts predict that the game should be played by 2035 to determine who will be the leaders in hydrogen. green tomorrow. Quebec must position itself, ”she pleaded.
The Liberal leader said she imagined “heavy equipment powered by hydrogen” in Fermont, “an ore transported to Sept-Îles” by a train powered by oxygen or even thermal power stations – from the Lower -Côte-Nord, Haute-Mauricie and Nunavik – which could “be converted to hydrogen”.
The PLQ also proposes to double water charges and to use “all of these sums to finance measures to protect our water”. The party also wants to reduce energy waste by two thirds within 10 years. It also intends to improve its climate targets by proposing reductions in greenhouse gases (GHGs) of 40% to 45% in 2030 compared to the 1990 level.
