“We must leave the players at the right level, neither too much nor too little“, said Sunday, September 25 on France Inter the Minister of Sports Amélie Oudéa-Castéra about their positions on the world in Qatar. The French Football Federation (FFF), seized by Amnesty International which denounces the non-respect of human rights, published on Saturday September 24 a first official press release relating to this debate, declaring that “participating does not mean turning a blind eye and endorsing“.
“The players of the France team are not politicians, they are not officials of the Quai d’Orsay, they are there to play“, says the minister. She also declares that it is “desirable” to lift “their level of consciousness by having elements of information on the context in which they will evolve“. But adds that it is not necessary “asking too much of them, it’s not their job, it’s not their responsibility“.

As for the position of the FFF, it is “congratulate“that the French Football Federation undertakes to”carry out checks on the respect of social rights and working conditions at their base camp in Qatar“. Amélie Oudéa-Castera “also welcome the wearing of the “One love” armband which is not only symbolic, it is a kind of commitment to the fight against all forms of discrimination, LGBT of course, but also against racism, against sexism. This is a good step, these are interesting and important signals“, she concludes.
