The European Metropolis of Lille (MEL) is preparing to announce, Thursday June 9, the new name of the Pierre-Mauroy stadium, which will be called Decathlon Arena, according to information from France Bleu Nord on Tuesday June 7. The announcement will be made to the elected officials of the Metropolitan Sports Commission. The stadium of the LOSC football team, located in Villeneuve d’Ascq, will be renamed from the next Ligue 1 season (2022/2023).

To affix its name to the stadium, the sports goods brand belonging to the Mulliez family and whose head office is located in Villeneuve d’Ascq plans to pay the sum of six million euros over five years renewable, according to the information from France Bleu Nord.

Already in early May, the northern brand announced that it had integrated judoka Teddy Riner as captain of its team of several dozen athletes, sponsored by Decathlon, for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

However, the mention “Pierre-Mauroy stadium”, named after the former Prime Minister and mayor of the city of Lille between 1973 and 2001, will remain since it will appear under the name “Decathlon Arena”. According to information from France Bleu Nord, the visuals are already almost ready. This decision will be ratified at the next MEL council on June 27th.
