The Peña Baiona in Basque

Who does not know the Pena Bayona ?
Rugby fans, in Top 14 and Pro D2, appreciate the joie de vivre of these Bayonne supporters, who bring atmosphere to all rugby stadiums.
And many people, outside the rugby atmosphere, also know his famous anthem, the “Vino Griego”.

The “Vino griego”, a song that has become an essential part of popular festivals

The Vino Griego was created in German in Austria, then was declined in Spanish, before becoming a very popular score for the bandas of the South West.
This melody made its appearance in the bays of the Jean Dauger stadium in Bayonne, sung by the members of the Peña Baiona, an association created in 2002.
Very quickly, French lyrics were added, written by Dominique Herlax, quickly adopted by Bayonne supporters.

The “Vino Griego” also in Basque

In 2006, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the creation of Aviron Bayonnais, the already well-known Vino Griego was translated into Basque: it was Jean-Claude Iriart, at the time treasurer of the amateur rugby section of the ‘Aviron Bayonnais, who composes the unpublished lyrics, which praise the bravery of the players and the fervor of the supporters.
