As during the stage between Vulcania and Issoire, the adventurers have a new chance to shine, Thursday July 13, during the 12th stage between Roanne and Belleville-en-Beaujolais. On the hilly roads of Beaujolais, the race to take the breakaway promises to be explosive.
On the program, three third category climbs await the runners: the Thizy-les-Bourgs hill followed by the Ecorbans and Casse Froide passes, before the final pack with two second-category difficulties: the cols de la Croix Montmain and de la Croix Rosier (5.3km at 7.6%) 28 kilometers from the finish.
If the favorites won’t want to get too tired before reaching the Alps, several stage hunters looking for a first victory in this Tour de France 2023 could be tempted to get out of the peloton. The scarecrow Wout van Aert and his great rival Mathieu van der Poel could aim for the win like the French Julian Alaphilippe and Valentin Madouas with a route to their liking.
