The PCQ multiplies actions to encourage Éric Caire to resign

Door-to-door, petition, creation of a website: the Conservative Party of Quebec (PCQ) multiplies actions to encourage the resignation of the Minister of Cybersecurity and Digital and Member of Parliament for La Peltrie, Éric Caire, because the abandonment of the third highway link between Quebec and Lévis.

“We’re going to send flyers, we’ll be at the grocery store, at the mall, you’ll see us everywhere. We are going to display. We will do everything so that Éric Caire is forced to resign, ”hammered Conservative leader Éric Duhaime on Monday, in front of the constituency offices of the caquiste, in Quebec.

A handful of activists braved the pouring rain to support Mr. Duhaime. The latter launched a petition inspired by a bill tabled by Éric Caire himself, in 2011, wanting the collection of a majority of voters’ signatures to allow the dismissal of the elected representative of their constituency.

In 2018, the CAQ member had put his seat at stake in the event of a decline in his party on the third link. He had also promised in 2022 to fight until his “last drop of blood” for the realization of the project.

Last Thursday, at the unveiling of the project involving a single tunnel dedicated to public transport, the minister however specified that he had no intention of resigning. “I trust the judgment of my fellow citizens, as I have always done in the last six terms,” he said.

According to Mr. Duhaime, the minister’s inability to “honor his word” increases the cynicism of the population towards politicians and institutions. He therefore invites him to submit his resignation, which would then trigger a by-election.

In the event that Éric Caire would try to be re-elected during this complementary ballot, the Conservative leader would be in the race, he said. “I intend to face him and I will let the people of Quebec decide,” he said, drawing applause from the crowd.

Also inspired by the legislative text that had been tabled by Mr. Cairo, the Parti Québécois also announced on Monday that it intended to table a bill allowing the dismissal of deputies who do not respect their commitments.

At the time these lines were written, Éric Caire’s firm had still not answered our questions.

Further details will follow.
