The pavilion of a Montreal school closed on Monday due to pieces of plaster that came off

Pieces of plaster that came loose last week in the ceiling of the Saint-Ambroise primary school, in the Montreal borough of Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, forced the preventive closure of one of its pavilions for the Monday day.

“A piece of plaster in the ceiling came loose last week at the Normanville pavilion, creating dust in a classroom. Friday at the end of the day, the same situation occurred in the library of the building,” we can read in a communication sent to parents early Sunday afternoon that The duty was able to consult.

This problem is not linked to the structure of the building, indicates Joëlle Lachapelle, director of the Communications and Public Affairs Department of the Montreal School Services Center. She explains that it was rather the heat and humidity of last week which weakened the finishing plaster in certain places. The pieces that came off also remained in the ceiling space and never hit the ground, she assures the Duty.

The temporary closure of the Normanville pavilion and its daycare service will therefore allow “professionals to complete the interventions undertaken necessary for a healthy, safe environment conducive to learning,” states Ms. Lachapelle. Inspections and preventive interventions were first carried out last week, then this weekend.

Concerning the reopening of the pavilion, Joëlle Lachapelle affirms that “the situation will be reassessed tomorrow [lundi] during the day by technical experts”.

For its part, the school management says it is aware of the headache that this closure may represent for certain families. “Rest assured that we are taking all measures to ensure that the situation is restored as quickly as possible and in a safe manner for all students and staff,” she wrote in the communication.

However, the Chambord pavilion of the Saint-Ambroise school and its daycare service will be open on Monday.
