The Parti Québécois worried about the floods in Charlevoix and Lanaudière

The images of the floods in Charlevoix and Lanaudière are “disturbing”, said Tuesday the leader of the Parti québécois (PQ), Paul St-Pierre Plamondon. The latter also accuses the government of not taking the issue of adapting cities to climate change seriously.

During a press conference in the morning, Mr. St-Pierre Plamondon said he had a thought for the people affected by the rising waters, but more particularly for the two volunteer firefighters who are missing in the area of Saint -Urban, near Baie-Saint-Paul. “Let us also call on people, insofar as there will be other precipitation this afternoon, to be very careful for the rest of things,” he added.

Asked whether François Legault’s government had learned any lessons from the 2019 floods, the leader of the PQ replied that the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ) was taking “appearance measures” that do not meet the needs of cities in terms of of climate change.

“If this kind of extreme climatic events becomes the norm, if also heat islands in summer become unlivable, we must green then we must adapt urban planning. It’s a reality. And unfortunately, no, we don’t see any sign of a government that really takes it seriously,” he said.

Further details will follow.
