the Parliament adopts the extension of the legal period, from 12 to 14 weeks of pregnancy

The text, proposed by the opposition in October 2020, had been supported by the parliamentary majority despite the reluctance of Emmanuel Macron. According to Socialist MP Marie-Noëlle Battistel, 2,000 women are forced each year to go abroad to have an abortion because they have exceeded the legal deadlines.

This is probably the last societal reform of Emmanuel Macron’s five-year term. Parliament has definitively adopted the extension of the legal duration of the voluntary termination of pregnancy (IVG), which can be carried out up to 14 weeks of pregnancy, against 12 currently, after a final vote in the National Assembly on Wednesday 23 February.

The text was presented in October 2020 by Albane Gaillot, ex-deputy La République on the march past among ecologists. Its objective was to prevent women who have exceeded the legal deadline from going abroad or taking risks to have an abortion. He had been encouraged by the president of the LREM deputies Christophe Castaner, despite the doubts expressed by Emmanuel Macron on the subject. The supporters of the text recall that many women realize that they are pregnant after having exceeded the legal deadline for abortion.

The senatorial majority had opposed this text on several occasions. Senator Alain Milon (LR) had for example declared that at 14 weeks, abortion was “an often unsustainable operation for many professionals”, and that some practitioners may refuse to practice it. Concerns shared by the College of Gynecologists.
