UEFA held a draw for the quarter-finals on Monday, December 20. This season, to increase the interest and attractiveness of the Women’s Champions League, a new competition formula has been put in place with a group stage, four pools of four teams, replacing the former round of 16 and round of 16 . The top two in each group qualified for the quarter-finals. The Parisiennes managed a clear round and OL also secured first place in their group.
The Parisiennes have an appointment in Munich for their quarter-final first leg. The players of Didier Ollé-Nicole have so far achieved a faultless, ensuring 18 points out of 18 in the group stage and conceding no goals. Better attack and best defense of the competition, the Parisian club will leave with the favor of the forecasts, but it will have to be wary of the Germans, who brought down Lyon this season.
OL have an appointment with the host of the next final, in Turin. OL are the most successful club in the history of the Champions League with a total of seven titles in nine finals played. it is also the only club to have won the competition five times in a row (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020). Jean-Michel Aulas’ club will be favorites against Juventus; who came out of a complicated group with Wolfsburg and Chelsea (the three teams finished with 11 points).
The Lyonnaises and Parisiennes were seeded for this draw: they will travel to the first leg (22-23 March), will host the second leg (30-31 March) and could face each other in the semi-finals at the end of April.
For the other quarter-finals, Arsenal will face Wolfsburg and Real Madrid will face FC Barcelona, who won last year, for a fratricidal duel in Spain. It will be the first European clasico between the two teams, much more unbalanced than for the men. The Catalans of the new Ballon d’Or Alexia Putellas are currently 22 points ahead of the Madrilenians in the league standings.
