The Paris public prosecutor’s office announced, Wednesday April 24, that it is requesting a dismissal of the appeal procedure in the case of the chlordecone health scandal in the Antilles. Several complainants in this case had appealed, to challenge the closure of the judicial investigation in January 2023, after 15 years of investigation.

“Not ignoring the health and human drama that chlordecone pollution constitutes”the general prosecutor’s office “considers in fact that the facts before the investigating magistrates could not be characterized on a criminal level or that they are, for some of them, covered by the statute of limitations for public action”. “It is up to the investigating chamber to decide what action should be taken in this procedure”, continues the prosecution. A hearing will be held on June 10.

More than 90% of the adult population in Guadeloupe and Martinique is contaminated by chlordecone, according to Public Health France, and the West Indian populations have one of the highest incidence rates of prostate cancer in the world.
