The Paris Conservatory ranked 4th best performing arts school in the world

The National Conservatory of Music and Dance in Paris (CNSMDP) is now ranked the fourth best performing arts education institution in the world, according to an international ranking.

It is preceded by the famous Juilliard School in New York (3rd), the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna (2nd) and the Royal College of Music in London which takes first place.

According to the QS Performing Arts 2022, which lists the 100 best establishments for this type of education, the CNSMDP has made strong progress over the past two years, going from 17th place in 2020 to fifth in 2021, then to fourth this year, said a statement from the institution released on Wednesday.

We know that the three criteria on which this ranking is based relate to academic reputation, professional reputation and research dynamics.“, welcomed the director of the Conservatory, Emilie Delorme, to AFP.

In order to ensure that this attractiveness remains strong in the future, I have launched an ambitious augmented Conservatory project, which aims to strengthen our competitiveness in the sound business, to integrate the dimension of the image, whose importance has been revealed during the (health) crisis, and to be able to have an online campus“, she details.

Created in 1795, the Conservatoire has trained illustrious artists, from Berlioz to Boulez, constantly renewing itself (and changing its name). 90% funded by public subsidies, it currently has 1,339 students, the vast majority of whom are French nationals, the others coming from the European Union (98) and the rest of the world (195). There are slightly more male students (789) than female students (550), especially in certain specialties.

In 2019, Emilie Delorme became the first woman to direct the conservatory, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2020 at the La Villette site. Under his tenure, the Conservatory launched a plan to combat sexist and sexual violence. She said she also wanted to examine the obstacles that prevented women from enrolling in certain disciplines, in particular composition and conducting.

According to figures from the Conservatory, the establishment records 92% success in the diploma and 91% employment rate in professional integration.
