In 1999, after several years spent in Longueuil, Diane Gauthier-Degré and Normand Degré were looking for land in the Lac-Brome sector to settle there all year round and find peace and quiet without straying too far from services. The couple had been touring the area when, while out for a walk, they met a lady at the corner of Blackwood Street who told them about a piece of land for sale on the same road.

“We were in our camper, so we decided to go and have a look and since it was dinner time; we stayed there to eat, then to spend the night. The next day when we woke up, the sun was rising over the lake, it was like love at first sight. It looked like diamonds glistening on the water. It was absolutely beautiful! », still marvels Diane Gauthier-Degré, captivated by the place. “She said to me: ‘That’s what I want,'” recalls her husband, taken aback by this statement at the time. “We didn’t know anything about this land, we didn’t know the price, but that’s what she wanted. So we went to the real estate agent, made an offer, and then we bought it. »

A well-established project

Both then took the time to find the ideal location to erect the house on this huge piece of land, so that it would be ideally oriented in relation to the views and the sunshine while being easy to access.

We didn’t need to build so big for the two of us, but I thought that the property had to be in line with the size of the land. And then, I think real estate is the best investment. So we decided to make a big house.

Normand Degré, owner

Invested in their project, they first commission an architect, who does not respond well to their requests, then do business with a builder who redesigns the interior volumes. “I also wanted it to be well insulated, made with quality materials, equipped with heated floors and then have large windows to take advantage of natural light and the landscape,” continues the owner.

Inside, Mr. Degré, assisted by his wife, devoted himself to his passion for woodworking by creating the floor, stairs, woodwork and frames himself. “I got equipped and did a few things around the house,” he says modestly, because the very neat result is clearly worthy of a professional.

The warm and light atmosphere is omnipresent, both in the common areas and in the private areas, which include four bedrooms and two bathrooms.

A smaller house

Cancer struck Normand Degré in 2017, then he returned in 2020, and if this house is a bit “their baby”, as his wife says, they found another smaller one in the same area.

“The decision to sell it was difficult because we love it very much, but it’s a lot of maintenance and we’re not getting any younger. She could undoubtedly make a family happy,” she believes.
