Concerts and recordings canceled, others that are postponed, the Orchester symphonique de Montréal (OSM) and the Orchester Métropolitain (OM) announced Thursday a complete reorganization of their activities for the month of January. The two groups made these decisions with the avowed objective of protecting their musicians, technicians and singers from the new wave of COVID-19 infections that we have been witnessing since December.
“Faced with the current situation, the Orchester symphonique de Montréal finds itself obliged to postpone with regret two events: Rafael Payare and the lyricism of Bruckner, scheduled for January 12 and 13, and Youth and Creativity, from Mozart to the OSM Competition, scheduled for January 16, ”writes the Orchestra. New dates will be announced later. The January 12 concert was also to be postponed, of course.
Concerts Brahms and Mahler, between hope and resignation, scheduled for January 19 and 20, are canceled. “Customers will of course be [joints] through customer service, ”said the OSM in its press release to the media.
As a consolation, the OSM is offering free webcast, until January 31, the first concert conducted by its new musical director, maestro Rafael Payare, on January 10, 2021.
This concert, broadcast live last year, included two works: the Symphony no 1 in C minor, op. 68, by Brahms and, as an appetizer, The Roman carnival, Overture, op. 9, by Berlioz.
Same scenario for OM
Unsurprisingly in the circumstances, the Orchester Métropolitain also announced the postponement of concerts at the end of the day. Chorus and colors (January 23, with the Metropolitan Choir) and Dance invitation, starring Milos and JoAnn Falletta (January 28). The ensemble will later specify the replacement dates for these two musical events.
“While waiting for the situation to return to normal, the Orchestra will offer the possibility of watching for free in the days following concerts that have already been webcast, so that the music can continue to resonate in the hearts of music lovers,” indicates the release of the whole. The OM invites the public to follow the evolution of the situation via its website and its social media platforms. ”
The rest of the OM and OSM seasons have not yet been affected by the health crisis. Tickets were still available on Thursday for the concerts of the two orchestras scheduled for February, March and later this year.
