It was a promise from the government. The order requiring supermarkets to inform consumers in the event of “shrinkflation” was published in the Official Journal on Saturday May 4. It forces distributors to display “directly on the packaging or on a label attached to or placed near the product, in a visible manner [et] legible” a mention for products whose quantity has decreased without their price falling.

This process allows manufacturers of consumer products, agro-industrialists or distributors, to reduce the quantities of products sold rather than increase prices too significantly, in a context where food prices have already increased by 20%. In two years. “A scam !” the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, was indignant in mid-April. “We’re putting an end to it.”he said.

As announced by the Minister for Commerce, Olivia Grégoire, this display must remain visible for two months, “from the date the product is put on sale in its reduced quantity”. This obligation will come into force on July 1. In the event of a breach, the text foresees “an administrative fine the amount of which may reach 3,000 euros for a natural person and 15,000 euros for a legal entity”.
