The Orchester symphonique de Longueuil changes its name

After a process that spanned several months, Alexandre Da Costa’s Orchester symphonique de Longueuil (OSDL) changed its name and officially became the Orchester philharmonique du Québec.

Remember that last March, The duty revealed that the orchestra was evaluating the possibility of a name change. In particular, it was envisaged that the orchestra be renamed “Orchestre national du Québec”, “Orchestre philharmonique national du Québec” or even “Orchestre symphonique national du Québec”.

In the world of classical music, many had confided, however, to feeling unease at the idea of a regional orchestra taking on the title “national”. Finally, the organization announced Monday morning that it had set its sights on the “Orchestre philharmonique du Québec”.

“By opting for the name “philharmonic”, the orchestra announces its artistic aims by expanding its symphonic repertoire to include contemporary and creative projects. Democratizing classical music remains its primary mission, ”we argued in a press release.

The reference to Longueuil therefore disappears, even if the City contributes significantly to the orchestra.

Mediation process

Since the arrival of Alexandre Da Costa as leader in 2019, the OSDL had already changed considerably. The orchestra’s musicians notably toured South America last year, which is unusual for a regional orchestra of this size.

We also note since his arrival that popular music takes on much more importance, which does not only make people happy internally. The renowned violinist’s maestro skills have also been questioned by several musicians. A mediation process was also initiated last November to find ways to improve the working climate. According to our information, the process was completed a few weeks ago.
