Up to 35°C on the Parisian Olympic sites. Athletes and spectators are preparing to face intense heat on Tuesday, July 30. The first of the season, the heat wave that suffocated the south of France on Monday with temperatures of up to 40°C is reaching Paris and its region, which is hosting many outdoor events. The Ile-de-France region is classified as yellow alert, according to the Météo-France bulletin, the institute placing 45 departments in a large southern half of the country on orange alert. The meteorological institute has in fact extended its orange heatwave alert from 41 to 45 departments – adding Indre, Jura, Saône-et-Loire and Nièvre – and is counting on “high heat” from 35 to 36°C “over a large part of the country”with “values ​​around 36 to 38°C, or even locally 39°C” in the South West and “locally” up to 40°C in the South-East. The heatwave warning will be maintained on Wednesday.

“In the Ile-de-France region, temperatures will reach 35°C on Tuesday and the night from Tuesday to Wednesday will be very hot, with minimum temperatures around 22°C”described Météo-France for the peak of this episode, climatologist Matthieu Sorel specifying that the intensification of these phenomena is “an emblematic manifestation of our climate change”. Most of the temporary stands are not shaded and some events organized on Tuesday afternoon will be particularly exposed to the heat (women’s rugby 7s semi-finals, field hockey qualifiers, beach volleyball and 3×3 basketball preliminary rounds, BMX freestyle qualifiers, etc.). The athletes “are used to”stressed the Minister Delegate for Health, Frédéric Valletoux, on BFMTV, inviting spectators to stay well hydrated.

For spectators, the Ile-de-France Region announced on Monday the activation of the heatwave plan, with distribution of water and hats. The Ile-de-France Mobilités (IDFM) transport authority has for its part deployed unprecedented means from Monday to cool down travelers. It plans to distribute 2.5 million water briquettes in 74 stations and stations. Water fountains are also installed in 94 points of the network, “including 90% of the stations serving the Olympic sites”.
