While he hoped to reconquer Istanbul, conservative Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan saw his candidate fail against the CHP. Even in his party’s usual strongholds, the opposition has scored victories.

The reign of Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Türkiye is it coming to an end? The question arises after the electoral rout of his camp during the municipal elections. Sunday March 31, his opponents were celebrating in the streets. The mayor of Istanbul, leader of the opposition, was largely re-elected. “Tonight you sent a message, and we will see if it will be well received. The people said: we are for peace, democracy and justice”welcomed Ekrem Imamoglu on stage.

Erdogan acknowledges his defeat

The president’s party, the AKP, is being swept away by a red wave. The CHP opposition doubles its votes compared to 2019, signing victories in Anatolia and the Black Sea, usual strongholds of Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The leader had to record his victory. “We will respect the decision of our nation, we will avoid being stubborn and acting against the national will”, did he declare. The Turkish president, however, had made this election a personal matter. With his candidate, he wanted to reconquer Istanbul, the city where he was born and grew up in politics. The country has been in the grip of spectacular inflation for a year.
