The 2nd Saturday in March is a fixed date in the Fisherman’s Almanac that many look forward to. It marks the opening of trout fishing. Bruno Garcia from the Charente-Maritime fishing federation looks back on this long-awaited day for fishermen on France Bleu la Rochelle.
Bruno Garcia : the opening of the trout will take place on March 12 on the rivers of almost all of France and Charente-Maritime is no exception. But here when I talk to you about trout I am referring to real trout, to the most noble, those which if there were water all year round would have every chance of reproducing. I am thinking of the Fario of course, our native species. This closure was put in place for her, to protect her during all those winter months while she is in love.
So it is not for her that there will be an opening before the opening?
It is for its cousin the rainbow trout which benefits from an exemption in Charente-Maritime on the bodies of water. Fishing for this farmed fish is authorized all year round on the lakes of 17 but only on the lakes. The weather conditions are rather mild and some fishing associations have decided to please the fishermen a little before the hour. In concrete terms, they will release rainbow trout on a few bodies of water before the opening on March 12.
Are you going to tell us where the game room(s) are?
Everything has a price. I will tell you of course where the rainbow trout releases took place for the next weekend and where, of course, you can fish for them. It’s the southerners who are going to be spoiled with two spills. One on the lake of Heurtebize in Jonzac of 50 kg, another of 20 kg on the lake of Saint Simon de Bordes a few kilometers from the first. A third of 50 kg on the Rosière lake in Chatelaillon. All this for Saturday, February 26. So that’s the menu for this end of the month but for the following weekend you will have other opportunities. The menu is going to be quite extensive. I will let you know in due time.
The technique to seduce these rainbow trout?
There is a “variegated” that works very well, it is the mixed moth – corn grain. You are going to tell me the trout is a carnivorous how can it feed on a grain of corn? It is true but the size of a grain of corn is very close to the pellet that is distributed to them at the breeding stage and this is surely the explanation. Afterwards for those who want to keep it simple but still effective, the earthworm works very well.

Yes, be careful, these bodies of water are classified in the 2nd category where fishing is subject to a lot of restrictions during the pike closure period and in particular in relation to certain lures, the ban on live fishing, no spoons.
