“The only solution is to declare the French coast as a zero migrant zone”, reacts Pierre-Henri Dumont, deputy Les Républicains for the 7th district of Pas-de-Calais, guest of franceinfo on Wednesday 24 November. A reaction that follows the sinking Wednesday, November 24 afternoon of a boat of migrants in the Channel off Calais. The latest report from the French police reported at least 27 dead.
“This is the greatest tragedy in history with regard to missing and drowned migrants in the English Channel”, reacts Pierre-Henri Dumont. The deputy calls for migrants present on the coast to be transported to new centers to be “put to safety, and withdrawn from the clutches of the smugglers”. For him, it is necessary to develop reception centers and examination of situations to bring “if need for strength” migrants who are on the coast. “As soon as there is a death, it is a failure”, he judges “once the migrants are in Calais, it’s too late”, explains Pierre-Henri Dumont, “we put them in the hands of smugglers who, for their part, do a business of death.”
Smugglers who are “those who have blood tonight”, according to the deputy LR. He considers that this is also the case for associations not mandated by the State which “encourage migrants to stay in Calais and refuse to take the buses made available by the State to shelter them hundreds of kilometers from Calais”.
Pierre-Henri Dumont sends a thought to the families of people missing at sea, and expresses his weariness about the situation, “We cannot continue to bury the dead, the English Channel is turning into an open-air cemetery.”
