In 2023, radars brought in the historic sum of 2 billion euros to the State. This amount is partly explained by the increasing number of speed cameras on the roads. Illustration in Ardèche.

Impossible to escape the radar on a road in Ardèche. Three radars capable of flashing in both directions of traffic have been placed over just 8 km on the departmental road between Privas and Chomérac. Some motorists are exasperated. “It’s to fill the state coffers”, rattle a passenger. 23 fatal accidents, notably due to excessive speed, were recorded in 2023 in Ardèche, with an increase of 73% in one year.

Even more radars

The prefecture therefore decided to install a radar which can be easily moved along the departmental road. If this measure displeases residents, it is useful according to the mayor of Chomérac. “It’s a dangerous bridge where there have been many very serious accidents, fatal accidents”, justifies Mayor François Arsac. With two radars in his commune, he is the departmental champion of prevention and the prefecture has decided to further increase the number of mobile radars on the roads of Ardèche.
