A new highlight three months before the Games, the Olympic flame was officially handed over to France on Friday April 26 in Greece. On Saturday, she heads to Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) aboard the “Belem”.
The three-masted ship left the port of Piraeus (Greece) on the morning of Saturday April 27. THE Belem splits the waters of the Mediterranean towards Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône). The Olympic flame leaves Greece, surrounded by a very proud crew who are experiencing an extraordinary adventure. “It’s a pretty big symbol for us”, notes a young man. At the dock, many curious people came to share the emotion of this departure. “It’s a unique opportunity to see something wonderful because the boat is truly fantastic”underlines a spectator.
An “honor” for France
For boarding, the flame was presented by Tony Estanguet, president of the organizing committee for these Olympic Games. “I haven’t slept much, there’s been this excitement since yesterday. It’s such an honor to get the Olympic flame back”, he enthuses. The Belem will spend twelve days at sea for a historic crossing. The flame will arrive in France on May 8. De Marseille will then begin its relay across the country until the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on July 26.
