The Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Committees have joined four First Nations for the feasibility phase of the project to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games back to Canada in 2030.
The agreement unveiled Tuesday between the Lil̓wat7úl (Líl̓wat), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations, the City of Vancouver and the Municipality of Whistler signifies their commitment to participate in an assessment of the feasibility and development of the initial concept to bring the Games back to Canada’s west coast in 2030.
Vancouver and Whistler previously hosted the Winter Olympics in 2010.
The COC will fully fund the technical work and local engagement required to complete the assessment of the feasibility of the concepts for the 2030 Games.
This would be the first time that a bid led by First Nations representatives would be presented for the Olympic Games.
After the feasibility and initial concept phase of the process, a complete evaluation will be carried out by all the signatories of the collaboration agreement. Should a decision be made to move forward with a potential bid to host the 2030 Games, Canada may pursue dialogue with the IOC in accordance with the formal international bid process.
