In Marseille, in Bouches-du-Rhône, more than a month’s worth of precipitation fell in the space of two hours on Tuesday, October 8. Many residents spent the early morning evacuating the water with the help of firefighters.
At 7 a.m. this Tuesday, October 8, residents of Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) discovered the Old Port flooded. Torrential rains fell on the city overnight, swamping vehicles before the sun had yet risen. Raised manhole cover, slow traffic in the city center, a bus trip with its feet in the water… Implausible scenes were relayed on the internet.
Between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. in Marseille, more than a month of precipitation fell. “It happened several times in September, and in October, here we go again”deplores a cook whose restaurant was submerged. The firefighters were called upon more than 700 times in two hours. “According to Météo-France, 80 mm fell during the episode”explains Marc Faveau, deputy general director of daily town in Marseille. The situation has now returned to normal.
