The mention of the origin of the meat on the packaging of certain food products will no longer be mandatory within a few weeks. A measure that is not unanimous.

Within a few weeks, the origin of the meat will no longer be systematically indicated on prepared dishes, ravioli or even ham. “Not knowing where the product comes from is still very serious”, notice a man. Following the horse meat lasagna affair in 2017, an obligation of transparency on the origin of the meat was introduced. It was only applied on an experimental basis in France.

Thibault Federici, a breeder, is not in favor of this end of obligation. According to him, the food industry “will turn to imported meat (…) which does not have the same rules as us at all”. Consumer associations do not understand this deletion. “Adding oil to make a carpaccio, for example, exempts the manufacturer from this obligation to indicate the origin of the meat. It is nonsense for us”, regrets Gilles Castaing, president of the UFC-Que Choisir Saône-et-Loire association.
