This is a worrying figure: less than one in two women aged 50 to 74 take part in breast cancer screening in France. However, it is the most common and deadliest cancer for women.
It is a disease that affects nearly one in eight women in France. Since 2004, the national screening program has offered women between 50 and 74 years of age a mammographic examination. “Mammography can detect precancerous lesions which do not develop into invasive cancer. (…) But even if it is an invasive cancer, the earlier the disease is found, the better the prognosis and the less harsh the treatment.”explains an expert.
More than 12,000 deaths per year
Less than one in two women would use this free screening, far from the European objective of 70% of women screened. Covid, medical deserts, extended treatment times: health professionals are warning. In France, more than 61,000 cases of breast cancer occur each year, causing more than 12,000 deaths. In addition to regular medical check-ups, to detect the slightest abnormality, the authorities recommend regular self-palpation of the breasts.
