This is a very strong increase. In 2023, the number of racist, xenophobic or anti-religious crimes and offenses recorded in France by the national police and gendarmerie jumped by 32% compared to 2022, according to figures published Wednesday March 20 by the Ministry of the Interior.

In total, the national police and the national gendarmerie recorded last year “nearly 15,000 offenses committed because of ethnicity, nation, alleged race or religion throughout French territory, including 8,500 crimes or misdemeanors [et 6 400 contraventions]notes the ministerial statistical service for internal security (SSMSI). The document notes “a clear acceleration at the end of the year”marked by a surge in anti-Semitic acts linked to the war between Israel and Hamas.

8,850 victims and 4,200 accused

In 2023, the security services identified 8,850 victims of racist crimes. “These are mainly natural persons, including men, people aged 25 to 54 years and foreign nationals of an African country are over-represented”points out the SSMSI, which specifies that“around 4,200 people were implicated by the security services, more than half of whom are between 25 and 54 years old”.

“Outside Paris, two departments, namely Bas-Rhin and Alpes-Maritimes, display an overall rate of racist crimes or offenses per inhabitant almost twice the national average [en moyenne un crime ou délit à caractère raciste pour 10 000 habitants sur le territoire national]further notes the SSMSI.
