Nearly one in two French people is overweight, according to a study. The journalist Florence Griffond, present on the set of 12/13, Tuesday February 21, takes stock.
According to an INSERM study, the number of adults who suffer from obesity has doubled in 50 years in France. “Today, 47% of French people are overweight and among them, 17% suffer from obesity. (…) It affected 8.5% of French people in 1997, 15% in 2012 and 17% in 2020”, explains journalist Florence Griffond, on the set of 12/13, Tuesday, February 21. According to the study, 57% of people over 65 are affected by obesity, compared to 23% of 18-24 year olds.
Containment, one of the causes of this increase
“Men are more often overweight than women, 37% versus 24%”, explains the journalist. Finally, obesity concerns more than 20% of the inhabitants of the north and north-east of France, while Île-de-France and Pays de la Loire are the least impacted regions. Workers and employees are the most affected by obesity. In addition, with confinement, the proportion of obese children almost doubled during the health crisis. “It went from 2.8% to 4.6%”concludes Florence Griffin.
