In eight days, the number of cattle farms infected with epizootic hemorrhagic disease has tripled in France. This virus, which mainly affects cattle, has been recorded in 53 outbreaks, the Ministry of Agriculture communicated on Friday, October 6, in its latest report.

At the end of September, the ministry reported 19 outbreaks affected by epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EMD). A month later, it was identified in Hautes-Pyrénées, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Haute-Garonne, Gers as well as in Landes, the ministry told AFP. Moreover, “a case of MHE infection of deer was detected in the Hautes-Pyrénées”also affirmed the ministry.

Transmitted by biting midges, this disease does not infect humans. In each infected farm, the animals remain confined and a security perimeter, with a radius of 150 kilometers, has been set up. These measures came into force in an attempt to stem the spread from the end of September. On that date, the Minister of Agriculture, Marc Fesneau assured that the epidemic “do not destabilize[ait] not too many markets” agricultural.
