New Year’s Eve celebrations “went well”, assures the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin, Monday January 1st. The latter announced that 745 vehicles had been burned, a decrease of 10% in the number of vehicles burned compared to last year, during a trip to Montargis (Loiret). In total, 380 people were arrested “on national territory”according to official figures established at 7 a.m., which represents a decline of 10% compared to 2023.
Gérald Darmanin adds that a “forty agents [ont été] very slightly injured in their interventions”down 40% compared to 2023. The minister also records “an 80% reduction in fireworks attacks and mortar fire”and greets a “very important work” carried out upstream, with “seizures, border controls and a change of strategy since the urban riots”.
He also welcomed the gathering of more than a million people on the Champs-Elysées, “without any significant incident”. A few months before the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, this event was a test of the capital’s ability to welcome several hundred thousand spectators without incident.
