The firefighters are mobilized, but not only in the south of the country. With the announcement of a new rise in temperatures, the forests of the east and Hauts-de-France are also under surveillance.
The exercise is intense, but it is now essential for Alsatian firefighters. Dozens of meters of hose to unroll on the steep slopes of the Vosges mountains to reach a nascent fire as quickly as possible. That day, about fifteen firefighters were trained in forest firefighting, which is far from their daily routine. In recent years, training sessions like these have multiplied in order to lend a hand to firefighters in the south in summer and be ready to deal with the fires in Alsace, which are now more numerous.
If the risk of fire increases, it is because the forests are suffering from drought and global warming. In the Vosges mountains, some trees literally dry up. Like plants on the ground, they are hot and thirsty. So the agents of the National Forestry Office are also preparing. For example, with a map that lists the forest tracks most accessible to firefighters or the water supply points.
