In an African Cup of Nations where no favorite seems safe, Nigeria has been able to advance step by step to reach the last four without attracting too much attention. Victor Osimhen’s teammates face South Africa on Wednesday February 7 in the CAN semi-finals. The Super Eagles’ offensive potential was known, with many players playing in Europe, but they surprised with their defensive rigor throughout the competition. The Nigerians only conceded one goal, against Equatorial Guinea in the opening.
Opposite, South Africa achieved a feat to obtain its place in the last four, eliminating Cape Verde in a penalty shootout where goalkeeper Ronwen Williams stopped four Cape Verdean attempts (0-0, 2-1 tab). After an inaugural defeat against Mali, Bafana Bafana shone to reach the semi-finals, a stage of the competition they had not reached since 2000.
